A NEEDLE-SHAPED NOSE
The needle-shaped nose
Its fine pointed shape assures maximum air penetration. Since
the nose is much longer than that of other aircraft, and because,
at low takeoff and landing speeds, delta-winged aircraft move
at a much more pronounced angle to the ground (nose-up position
during takeoff and landing). A way had to be found to provide
the flight crew with clear visibility. This is why the nose
of Concorde is mobile and is lowered for landing and takeoff.
There is also a retractable visor which maintains the aerodynamic
profile of the aircraft in flight and protects the windshield.
