Concorde Returns With Engine Glitch [ 07/15/2002 ]
LONDON (AP) - In the latest glitch for the world's only supersonic passenger jet, a British Airways Concorde turned back from a London-to-New York flight Monday after experiencing engine trouble 11 miles above the Atlantic Ocean.
The plane landed safely at Heathrow Airport, and the airline said there were no injuries and the 59 passengers and crew members were never at risk. It was the second engine problem for the aging aircraft in the eight months since Concorde returned to the skies following a crash near Paris that killed 113 people.
Flight BA001 left London at 11:05 a.m. Monday.
About 90 minutes later, while traveling at 1,300 mph at an altitude of about 58,000 feet, it developed trouble in one of its four engines.
British Airways spokesman Richard Goodfellow said the engine experienced an "engine surge," with too much power flowing through it — making it hard for Concorde to fly in a straight line. "The captain took the decision to shut the engine down, and it's perfectly safe to fly on three engines," Goodfellow said. "Rather than fly on to JFK (airport) at subsonic speed, he took the decision it would be easier to fix at Heathrow because that's where the expertise is."
The plane returned to Heathrow at subsonic speed. Goodfellow said the jet did not have to make an emergency landing, and no incoming flights were delayed to make way for the Concorde.
The plane, carrying 50 passengers and nine crew, touched down at 2:06 p.m."There were no problems whatsoever. It was a perfect landing," Goodfellow said.He said engineers were working to determine the cause of the fault.
